PATTERN: Prayer Squares

About a year ago I crocheted a few prayer squares and donated it to a fellow CreateCrochet team member. She then sold them at a Relay for Life event to raise money. The items that she did not sell were donated to a local hospital.

Prayer Squares - pink

Prayer Squares

This is a fantastic way to use up your scrap yarn. Have fun with combining colors. If you make enough squares you can attach them to make a scrap happy afghan.

The idea behind these squares is that the person making them is praying while working on them. So the person receiving the square can be touched and blessed by your prayers.

  3. Thank you for the pattern, different than others I have seen Like this one the best. I am going to TRY to make it with help from some strong crocheters. I'm a hair stylist and give free/new Wigs for Cancer patients at a hospital I think this may be something I'll try to get approved to be able to give to all the patients. Thank you for the pattern. Let you know how things go.

    1. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND SOME OTHER SQUARES. WHERE DO YOU FIND THEM. I AM IN A PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY IN MY COMMUNITY. THESE WOULD BE NICE TO GIVE THE LADIES WHO CROCHET THE SHAWL AND TO PEOPLE WE HAVE ALREADY GIVEN A PRAYER SHAWL TO WHEN THEY AGAIN IN THE HOSPITAL ETC.

    1. I updated the pattern. It looks like I failed to add that there should be a row of SC (single crochet) between each row of puff stitch.
      Thanks!

    2. There is only 7 stitches I am working in. What happens to the 4 extra stitches. It says SC in 3 st., puff stitch, SC in 3 sts., ch 1 & turn. What happens to the 4 sts. Left ????

  5. Whew when you turn to do the next row, watch that you are getting back into that first crochet. It is really easy to skip it and do the next one by accident. I also noticed when I tried the pattern this morning, it does not match the photo. It appears the photo uses 9 sc across and has more rows. Play with it, you'll figure out something you like.

  6. On row 10, skip the second sc in the next sc, or you will end up with two sc between each puff stitch. You only want one sc between each PS and a sc at the end of the row. The pattern will not come out right otherwise.

  7. On the instructions for the Puff Stitch, it seems that it is incomplete. When you end with 7 loops on your hook, then what? It's my guess that you YO and pull yarn through all the loops to actually end the stitch. Am I correct or not? That's what I've been doing, then I go on to the next stitch, which is a SC. It seems to be coming out okay and looks like the picture. This pattern sure had a lot of errors in it. Row 10 seems not right either. Our church has been trying the prayer squares, and this particular pattern has given the ladies a fit trying to get it to come out right. We got the original one before you even corrected the single crochet row between the puff stitch rows. Man, it was a mess. Please try to double check or at least try doing a sample actually using your own pattern before putting it on line the next time.

  9. Row 2 is also wrong. As written it only uses 7 stitches instead of the 11 you have in Row 2.
You need 2 more sc on each side of the puff stitch.
